William J. Achcet

William “Bill” J. Achcet, 101, passed away suddenly on October 8, 2022.


He was a loving father who worked hard and always cared for his family and friends.


Born in Amsterdam, NY, on February 28, 1921. He was the son of William and Margaret Harrington Achcet.

Bill received his education and graduated from St. Mary’s Institute in Amsterdam, where he played varsity baseball and basketball.


Bill was an Honorably Discharged United States Army Veteran of World War II who served in Okinawa.

Bill retired from the City of Amsterdam Fire Department stationed at Number 5 Firehouse on Division Street for the majority of his career. He also worked as a carpet installer with Don MacVean, Amsterdam Printing & Litho, and Dexter Delivery for Sears & Roebuck.


Bill was a parishioner and communicant of St. Mary’s Church as well as St. Peter’s Church in Naples, Florida, and served as a eucharistic minister at both churches. He was a devout Catholic saying the rosary and attending Mass daily. He was a member of the St. Mary’s Holy Name Society, John J. Wyszomirski American Legion Post 701, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8690 in Broadalbin, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and past member and officer of the Owl Pond Hunting and Fishing Club.


Bill was a loving and devoted husband and was united in marriage on October 9, 1943, to Mary L. Ginevan Achcet, who predeceased Bill on July 14, 2004. Bill is survived by his son, Bill C. Achcet (Margaret) of Edinburg NY; his daughter, Mary Alice Benamy (Russell) of Media, PA; three grandchildren, Christine M. Achcet of Palenville, NY; Erica Benamy (Devon Burgoyne) of Philadelphia, PA; and Sara McGivney (Brenden) of Wilmington, DE; four great grandchildren, Olivia and Mia Achcet, C.J. and Billy Miller, sister-in-law, Margaret ``Peggy” Petruccione; and several nieces and nephews.


Bill was also predeceased by a brother, John, two sisters, Mary McKnight, and Midge Achcet and his grandson, Charlie P. Achcet.


Bill lived a long full life who enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, golf, playing cards, winemaking and going to the Saratoga Race Track with family and friends. He also loved the Yankees and never missed a game on TV.

For the last forty years, he spent the winter months at Holiday Manor in Naples Florida, where he made many wonderful and loving friends.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday,October 15, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, East Main St., Amsterdam, NY with Rev. Martin Kordel, CRL as celebrant.


Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fort Johnson, NY.


Calling hours are Friday, October 14, 2022, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Riley Mortuary, 110 Division St., Amsterdam
