William Cetnar

William F. Cetnar, 92, of Log City Road, Amsterdam, NY passed away Monday afternoon April 4, 2016 at St. Mary’s Healthcare with his loving family by his side.

Born in Amsterdam on January 4, 1924, he was the son of the late Joseph and Julia Maraj Cetnar.

Bill attended Milton Avenue School, Woodrow Wilson School, Theodore J. Roosevelt Junior High School and graduated in 1941 from Wilbur H. Lynch High School.

Bill was employed at Collette Manufacturing Co. in Amsterdam and the U.S. Army Depot in south Schenectady before induction into the military service on February 10, 1943 at Camp Upton, Long Island.
Bill served with the 9th Air Force Troop Carrier Command in Europe for 27 months and was discharged on Christmas Day 1945. His unit participated in paratrooper and glider drops in Normandy, Holland, the Battle of the Bulge and crossing of the Rhine.

After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, he returned home and went to work for Mohawk Carpet Mills in Amsterdam and General Electric in Schenectady. He subsequently went to work for the Amsterdam Recorder in the Editorial Department for 30 years, retiring in 1985. After retirement he went back to work as a driver for Fuccillo, Chrysler - Jeep- Dodge from 1989 to 2013.

Bill was a member of American Legion Post 337 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8690 both in Broadalbin, NY. He was also a member of the Sacandaga Boating Club.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Lori Turner (Rick) of Amsterdam, his son Dale Cetnar (Judy) of Broadalbin, NY ; his pride and joy, granddaughter, Megan Gerow of Amsterdam, one brother, Joseph Cetnar of Amsterdam. Nieces and nephews also survive.

Bill was also predeceased by his three brothers, Edmund, Raymond and Leonard Cetnar.

A memorial service with full military honors will be held Friday May 13, at 2:30 at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY. Those wishing to follow in the procession should be at the Riley Mortuary, Inc 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY; no later than 1:15.

There are no prior calling hours.
