William A. Bernat, 92 of Lansing Street, Hagaman, NY; passed away Thursday November 7, 2019 at St. Mary’s Healthcare in Amsterdam, NY.
Born in Amsterdam, on February 4, 1927, he was the son of the late Paul and Theodosia Pabis Bernat.
Bill received his education in the Amsterdam school system and was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School, Class of 1944.
He was a Senior Sales Representative for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company from 1954 until his retirement in 1990.
Bill was an honorably discharged veteran of World War II serving with the Merchant Marines.
Bill was a lifelong parishioner and communicant of St. Stephen’s Church in Hagaman, a member of the Amsterdam High School Football and Basketball Booster Club, Hagaman Youth Commission and the Bigelow Weavers Club.
On October 23, 1948, he married Pauline Urbelis Bernat. Pauline passed away July 10, 2010. Bill was also predeceased by his son William Mark Bernat on January 29, 1997, one brother, Leo P. Bernat and one sister, Florence Bylebyl,
Bill is survived by two daughters, Paulette Schwenke (Clifford) of Poinciana, FL; and Diane Vecchio (Larry) of Hagaman, NY; daughter-in-law, Maureen Harrington Bernat, five grandchildren, Nicholas Torani (Rachel), Melissa Judge (Michael), Angela Kelly (Shaun), Morgan Bernat (fiance, Anthony) and Keegan Kovacik (Zachary), ten great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated Monday morning November 11, 2019 at 11:00 at St. Stephen’s Church, 46 Pawling Street, Hagaman, NY 12086, with Fr O. Robert De Martinis officiating.
Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Calling hours are Sunday, November 10, 2019 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
