Virginia Ann Yowell DiScenza, 70, of Storrie Street, Amsterdam, NY; passed away Tuesday afternoon November 12, 2013 at River Ridge Living Center in Amsterdam.
Born in Amsterdam on February 9, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Russell B. and Lois B. Rivenburg Yowell.
Virginia received her education in the Amsterdam school system. She went on to further her studies in nursing and received, and graduated from BOCES with an LPN degree. She subsequently went on to receive her RN degree. She took great interest in the area of geriatric care.
Virginia worked as a Nurse’s Aide at area hospitals and nursing homes. After receiving her RN, she became Assistant Director of Nursing at Montgomery Meadows RHCF and also for, what is now, River Ridge Living Center in Amsterdam.
Virginia often took trips to see her family in Connecticut and enjoyed road trips over the years. She looked forward to holiday gatherings with her family and friends. She opened her home, and welcomed anyone who cared to stop by to join in the holiday celebrations. After retirement she enjoyed her friends and playing games on Face book and visiting the casino.
Virginia was predeceased by her husband, Frank DiScenza. She is survived by her son Thomas DeVito and his partner, James Bright of Canajoharie, NY; her daughter, Heather Lee of Amsterdam, NY; two stepsons, Brian DiScenza (Joyce) of Ma; and Dean DiScenza (Karen) of Hagaman, NY; one stepdaughter, Suzanne DiScenza of Albany, NY; four grandchildren, Anthony, Amber, Ashley and Taylor, one brother, John Yowell of CA. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Virginia was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Richard Yowell and two sisters, Doris Wherman and Betty Dimick.
A prayer service will be held Monday afternoon, November 18, 2013 at 2:00 at the Riley Mortuary, Inc 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY.
Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Tribes Hill, NY.
Relatives and friends may call on Monday from 12:00 to 2:00 prior to the service at the Riley Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations may be made to the funeral home to defray some of their expenses.
