Sheila Scheckton

Sheila A. Scheckton, 79 a lifelong Amsterdam, NY; resident, passed away Sunday, December 3, 2017.

Born in Amsterdam, on November 22, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Frank J. and Marie K. Masten Gillan.

Sheila received her education in the Amsterdam school system and graduated from St. Mary’s Institute.

Sheila was a homemaker who devoted her time to raising her children and then, in later years, enjoying her grandchildren who were the loves of her life.

She was nicknamed “St Sheila” by her brothers, in honor of her kindness, generosity and unending love of her family and friends.

Sheila was a faithful parishioner and communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam.

Sheila is survived by two daughters, Christine McNamara (Daniel) and Maria Sawitzki (Greg), both of Amsterdam and her son, Anthony Scheckton (Jessica) of Niskayuna, NY; six grandchildren, Rory, Brenna and Callum McNamara and Evan, Emery and Ella Sawitzki. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Sheila was also predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Gary Gillan and one sister, Mary Elizabeth McKenna.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated Thursday morning at 11:15 at St. Mary’s Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam, with Rev. Jeffrey L’Arche, M.S. officiating.

Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fort Johnson, NY.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial gifts in Sheila’s name may be made to St. Mary’s Church or St. Mary’s Institute.
