Salvatore J. Guarino, 80, of Country Club Lane, Fort Johnson, N.Y; passed away Saturday morning, July 12, 2014 at St. Mary’s Healthcare in Amsterdam.

Born in Noto, Sicily, Italy on Christmas Day in 1933, he was the son of the late Joseph and Cordina Parlagreco Guarino. He was known among those who cared for him for being thoughtful, kind, caring and generous. Sal always extended himself to others, his beautiful smile will be forever missed.

Sal was educated in the Amsterdam (N.Y.) school system and was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School. He attended Bentley College, in Boston, Mass., and graduated from Siena College with a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting.

Sal was first employed at Dorfman Accounting in Gloversville before going to work at Greno Industries of Scotia, N.Y.; where he held the position of controller until his retirement.

Sal achieved the rank of corporal with the United States Army, while stationed in Germany.

Sal was a parishioner and communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam. He was also a member of Rolling Hills Country Club in Fort Johnson for 45 years.

He was an avid golfer who had achieved six holes-in-one, a pilot who enjoyed traveling back and forth to Hilton Head, S.C., where he had a second home, once bowled a perfect 300 game and enjoyed skiing. Sal loved to dance and enjoy life and spending time at a casino. He took great pleasure in the camaraderie of long-time friends.

Sal is survived by his wife, Dawn, whom he married on April 30, 1961;, two sons, Robin (Colleen) of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; and Shawn, of San Gabrielle, Cal.; two brothers, Frank (Judy), of St. Augustine, Fla., and Vincent (Arlene) of Fort Johnson, N.Y; three grandchildren, Griffin, Tess and Nell Guarino, all of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Sal was also predeceased by his infant brother, Frank, and his brother, Anthony, who was killed in action.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 21, 2014 at 10:15 a.m. at the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, followed at 11 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial, at St. Mary’s Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam.

Interment will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Amsterdam.

Relatives and friends may call on Sunday, July 20, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Riley Mortuary.
