Richard Furman Sr. entered eternal rest on May 29, 2015 following a brief illness. He was born in Amsterdam, NY on April 3, 1926 to Andrew Furman and Victoria Leja. He married Florence Walek on September 27, 1947. He is survived by his wife, Florence, sons Richard Jr., Thomas, Christopher (Nancy), William, and one daughter Carol. He is also survived by his sister, Marcella Bukoff, 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, his daughter Jamie, his daughter-in-law Virginia, and his brother David.
Richard was a wonderful and caring husband, father, grand-father and friend. He was happiest when everyone would gather at his home, which he built room by room. He considered his home his castle. He was exceptional on so many levels and taught his children so much in regards to fixing, planting and living a simple life. He just loved being able to help others while never wanting in return.
He graduated from AHS, class of 1943. He was proud to have served his country by joining the US Navy during WWII. After his honorable discharge, Richard regrouped with friends John Tesiero and Raymond Francisco whereby they founded the Cranesville Block Co. He loved to tell the story of how he made their first cement block machine from a pattern that he saw in a Popular Science magazine.
At Richard's request, there will be no services. A private family "Celebration of Life" will be held at a later date. He will be laid to rest at Saratoga National Cemetery."Wishing him a peaceful passing on his next journey".
Memorial contributions can be made in Richard's memory to St. Mary's Church, 156 East Main Street or Cranesville Fire Dept; 167 Riverview Drive, both Amsterdam, NY 12010.
Arrangements are by the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
