Nellie L. Orsini, 79, of Forest Avenue, Amsterdam, NY; passed away Thursday evening January 16, 2014 at home in the comfort of her family.
Born in Amsterdam on August 17, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Lucy Venerosa Catello.
Nellie received her education in the Amsterdam school system and was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School.
Nellie was last employed as a chef at the Horace J. Inman Senior Center in Amsterdam and she also worked for Inman Manufacturing Co.
Nellie was a parishioner and communicant of the former St. Michael the Archangel Church and was also a member of its Rosary Society.
She was a member of the John J. Wyszomirski American Legion Post 701 Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Post 55 Ladies Auxiliary and the Knights of Columbus Council 209 Ladies Auxiliary. She also served on the Board of Directors for the Independent Living Center and the Amsterdam Housing Authority for 25 years. She was a volunteer for the Cataract Care Center of Fulton and Montgomery Counties.
Nellie loved Bingo, playing cards and going to the Casinos.
Nellie is survived by one son, Joseph Slawienski of Amsterdam, two daughters, Elizabeth Kasper of Schenectady, NY; and Belinda Douglas of Amsterdam, two sisters, Linda Howard and Mary DePalma of Amsterdam and seven grandchildren, Joseph and Peter DeMassi, Janelle Welke, Johnathon Slawienski, Mark and Matthew Vedder and Courtney Slawienski, two great grandchildren and special niece, Phyllis DeRossi and nephews, Richard Catello and Michael Vedder and several cousins and her pets, Moe and Sadie
Nellie was also predeceased by her brother, Alexander Catello and her sister, Carmella Vedder and her grandson, Marcus Vedder.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thank you to Community Hospice of Amsterdam, Dr. Michael Sheridan and Allyson.
It was Nellie’s request that no funeral services or calling hours be held.
Cremation took place at Parkview Crematorium in Schenectady, NY.
