Joseph Babrow

Joseph F. Babrow, 84, of Caroline Street, Amsterdam, NY; passed away Monday March 20, 2017 at St. Mary’s Healthcare in Amsterdam.

Born in Amsterdam on May 16, 1932, he was the son of the late John and Mikalina Babrowicz.

Joe received his education in the Amsterdam school system, and graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch High School.


Joe was employed for several supermarkets and retired from Great American Food Stores.
He was an honorably discharged United States Navy Veteran and served from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean Conflict.

Joe was a parishioner and communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam.

He was a member of the John J. Wyszomirski American Legion Post 701, Irish American Club and the Port Jackson Bocce League, all in Amsterdam. He also coached the St. Mary’s Institute C.Y.O. basketball team and Bishop Scully High School baseball for many years.

Joe was predeceased by his wife Margaret “Peggy” Babrow in 2009, two daughters, Peggy Lee Babrow in 1979 and Susan Babrow Van Der Veer in 2014. He is survived by two daughters, MaryBeth Arminio (Jeff), Sharon Babrow (Rob) all of Amsterdam, six grandchildren, Sean Van Der Veer, Katlyn Van Der Veer, Alicia Cowan (Aaron), Ashley Arminio (Christopher), Tyler Ruggeri (Karla) and Gabby Ruggeri (Loren), four great grandchildren, Kristina and Isabella Cowan, Emma Clizbe and Graysen Rivera. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated Saturday March 25, 2017 at 11:15 at St. Mary’s Church 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fort Johnson, NY.
