John P. Murphy Jr., 92, of McCleary Avenue, Amsterdam, NY; passed away November 13, 2020 at River Ridge Living Center in Amsterdam.
Born July 21, 1928, he was the son of the late John P. and Freida Lais Murphy Sr.
He received his education and graduated from St. Mary’s Institute in Amsterdam. He also enrolled in the G.E. Apprentice Program.
John retired from G. E., where he was a Maintenance Engineer.
John was an honorably discharged United States Army veteran, serving his country from 1946 to 1948.
John and Marie retired to Homestead, Florida in 1989 and enjoyed traveling with friends.
John was a parishioner and communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam.
He was a member of V.F.W. Post 4127, Knights of Columbus Council 4998, American Legion Post 43, Leisure City Moose Lodge2258, G.E. Quarter Century Club, G.E. Apprentice Alumni Association and the Irish American Club.
John is survived by his wife, Marie M. Lajeunesse Murphy whom he married April 14, 1951, three sons,
Thomas Murphy (Clare) of Edinburg, NY; Richard Murphy of Amsterdam and Jack Murphy (Deborah) of Schenectady, NY; three daughters, Jean Allen (Jack) of Amsterdam, Donna Murphy Houlihan of Edinburg and Anne Shelton (Brian) of Ballston Lake, NY and one sister, Mary Kryszczak (Al) of Plant City, Florida, twelve grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
There are no calling hours.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at a later date and time and will be announced on a future date.
Interment will take place at St. Mary’s cemetery, Fort Johnson, NY.
