John H. Hand

John H. Hand, 84, of Amsterdam, NY; passed away Sunday, September 3, 2023 at Mountain Valley Hospice after a long illness.


Born in Litchfield, NY on January 30, 1939, he was the son of the late Harold and Bernice Hull Hand.


John received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Ithaca College, his Master of Science Degree from the State University of New York at Oneonta. He received his administration certification from Stony Brook University.


John was a guidance counselor at Wilbur H. Lynch Middle School and Amsterdam High School. He retired as Assistant Principal of Lynch Middle School in 1994.


He was a member of the Amsterdam Retired Teachers Association and was an avid golfer and a member of Rolling Hills Country Club.


John is survived by his wife, Maureen Maloney Hand, step-daughters, Debra Cosentino (Michael A. Miller) of Amsterdam, Betsy Kelsey (Anthony) of Saratoga Springs, NY; and Valerie Holden (Steve) of Parker, CO; two step-granddaughters, Emily Maureen Kelsey of Saratoga and Ashlee Angstram (Mikhail) of the state of Virginia and two step-grandsons, Sean Anthony Kelsey of Saratoga and Alex Holden of Parker, CO. nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.


John was also predeceased by his brother, Stanley Ball and Stepson Darrel Dine.


Respecting John’s wishes, there are no calling hours and a private family funeral service will be held.


Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fort Johnson, NY.
