Edward F. “Eddie” Harkins, 84 of Saratoga Avenue, Amsterdam, NY; passed away Thursday morning August 30, 2012 at Wilkinson Residential Healthcare Facility in Amsterdam.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Rose Marie Barber Harkins.
Ed was a graduate of St. Mary’s Institute in Amsterdam.
Ed began a life long career in the transportation industry with Amsterdam Dispatch, which was owned and operated by his father in law, John J Daly. In addition, Ed was a salesman for Boss - Linco Lines, Red Star and Froland Transportation of Albany, NY.
Ed will be remembered for his devoted commitment to his family and friends. He was always known for his perseverance in sports and life. Ed’s spirit and competitiveness can be identified with the thrill of one of his child’s games, a Saratoga horse race or the challenge of a slippery putt.
Ed was a parishioner and communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam.
He was a member of the Bigelow Weavers Club, Elks Lodge 101, Irish American Club and the Amsterdam Municipal Golf Course.
His wife, Bertha ”Bertie” Daly Harkins to whom he was married on June 18, 1949, passed away on January 15, 2005. Eddie is survived by one son Edward “E.J.” Harkins (Kathy) of Saratoga Springs, NY; five daughters, Sharyn Dabiere (Dave) of Fort Edward, NY; Holly Dargush (Tony) of Amsterdam, Robin Moller (Wes) of Hagaman, NY; Kathy Harkins of West Glenville, and Heidi Harkins (Gina Castelli) of Ballston Lake, NY, one brother, Joseph Harkins (Mari Gay) of Amsterdam, one sister, Mary Ellen Kolbe of Amsterdam, 13 grandchildren, Christopher & Carla Dabiere, Maura, Maeve, Vincent (Jamie) and Anthony “Duke” Dargush (Amanda), Jeffrey (Ashley), Matthew and Jillian Moller, Corey, Daniel and Casey Harkins and 2 great grandchildren (Brayden and Cameron Moller), and brother and sister in laws, John, Winnie and Pat Daly and Jackie Murphy. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Eddie was also predeceased by a daughter, Mary Christine and a grandson, Westmore L. Moller.
Funeral services will be held on Monday morning at 8:30 at the Riley Mortuary, Inc 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY, followed at 9:15 by a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam, NY.
Interment will follow at St. Mary’s cemetery, Fort Johnson, NY.
Calling hours are Sunday from 4 to 7 at the Riley Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate Memorial gifts in Eddie’s name may be made to St. Mary’s Institute 10 Kopernik Way, or to Community Hospice of Amsterdam 246 Manny Corners Road, both Amsterdam, NY 12010.
