AMSTERDAM – Services will be held Thursday and Friday for Edgar R. Prahl, 83, who died unexpectedly Saturday at St. Mary’s Healthcare.
Born September 25, 1929 to Edgar and Mary Prokop Prahl of Amsterdam, he was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Grammar School and St. Mary’s Institute, and a lifelong Amsterdam resident.
Ed served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1952, and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was awarded two Battle Stars, European and Asian Occupation Medals, a Good Conduct Medal, a Korean Government Medal, and a Navy Unit Citation. He was discharged as a Gunners Mate Second Class.
He was an Instrument Technician at General Electric for many years, and retired from Environment One Corp. in 1995. Ed earned his amateur radio license and private piolot’s license, and was an avid golfer. He was also a member of the John J. Wyszomirski American Legion Post 701 in Amsterdam.
Ed was a member and deacon of Trinity Lutheran Church in Amsterdam, and was commissioned deacon with the Foothills Conference of the ELCA.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley MacIntosh Prahl, son Mark Prahl of Upton, MA, daughter Dana Yanulavich (Barry) of Glenmont, and grand-daughter Katie of Glenmont; sister, Pauline Antos of Hagaman, and several nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by his stepchildren, Pamela Franklin of Schenectady, Peggy (Allen) Brossman of Longmont, CO., George Matern (Julie) of Berthoud, CO., Lynn Matern – Boniecki (Tom) of Schenectady, and Beverly Matern – Suhey (Michael) of Horseheads, NY.
Calling hours are Thursday 4 to 7 p.m. at the Riley Mortuary, Inc. 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 42 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY.
Interment will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ed’s name may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church Property Fund.
