Anthony S. Sorbero, 94, of Amsterdam, NY; passed away Wednesday evening, February 13, 2019 at St. Mary’s Healthcare in Amsterdam, with his loving family by his side.
Born in Amsterdam on November 30, 1924, he was the son of the late Salvatore and Rubina Theliaferro Sorbero.
Tony received his education in the Amsterdam school system and graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch High School. He also received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I.
Following his retirement from Sweet Construction Association, he went to work for the New York State Comptroller’s Office, as an auditor.
Tony was an honorably discharged United States Army veteran of World War II, serving from 1943 to 1945 and was a recipient of the Purple Heart Award.
Tony was a parishioner and communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam.
He was a member of The Military Order of the Purple Heart and several local veterans’ organizations.
Tony enjoyed doing outside work, and was always willing to give a hand to family and friends who needed help, for whatever the case may have been.
Tony married Shirley Falcone Sorbero November 12, 1950. She passed away on December 2, 2007.
Tony is survived by one son, Michael A. Sorbero (Jean), two daughters, Patricia McCaffrey (Robert) all of Amsterdam, and Susan Lee (Doug) of Broadalbin, NY; one sister, Carmela Brooks of Rotterdam, NY; six grandchildren, Joseph, Matthew, Robby, Ryan, Alyssa and Sarah, seven great grandchildren, Patrick, Sam, Tony, Elizabeth, Riley, Ava and Kameron. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Tony was also predeceased by an infant brother, Carmen and brothers, Frank, Joe, John and Tom Sorbero, three sisters, Mary Murrane, Lucia Nocian and Rose Sorbero.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 18, 2019 at 10:45 at the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010, followed at 11:15 by a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam, with Rev. Jeffrey L’Arche M.S. officiating.
Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fort Johnson, NY.
Relatives and friends may call Monday morning from 9:00 to 10:45, prior to the service at the Riley Mortuary.
Memorial gifts in Tony’s name may be made to The Military Order of the Purple Heart, 7008 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, VA 22003.
