Angelo “Babe” P. Russo, 93, of Amsterdam, NY passed away on Wednesday, May 31, 2017.
Born on August 8, 1923 in Amsterdam, NY, he was the son of the late John and Angeline Russo.
Babe received his education at Guy Park Avenue and Wilbur H. Lynch High School, class of 1941, where he was a three letter athlete (basketball, golf, and baseball) and later joined the services.
Babe was a United States Navy Veteran of WWII serving as a Gunner’s Mate on a submarine chaser in the Pacific from 1943 to 1946.
For decades Babe was in partnership with his brothers as an owner of Russo’s Grill in Amsterdam. He was also a member of St. Agnello’s. His love for cooking and socializing followed him throughout life.
In addition, he ran Windmill Lanes and was the concessionaire Municipal Golf Course, both in Amsterdam, for many years.
When Babe wasn’t in the restaurant, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, golfing with family and lifelong friends, and never missing an opportunity to go to the race track.
Babe was a former parishioner of St. Michael’s Church of Amsterdam.
He is survived by his wife, Lucy Russo of 67 years; his son Daniel J. Russo (Kelly Faville) of Hagaman, NY, his brother, Vincent Russo of Amsterdam, NY, and his two grandchildren, Kristina Marshall (Kyle) of Hagaman, NY and Daniel A. Russo (Christina Fazio) of Arlington, VA and his sister-in-law Audrey Russo. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and numerous friends and families whose lives he impacted.
In addition to his parents, Babe was preceded in death by his four brothers and sister-in-laws, Joseph, Louis (Elizabeth “Peachy”), Patsy, Anthony, and Augusta Russo.
Babe’s funeral services will be held on Monday, June 5, 2017 at 11:15am at St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam.
Calling hours are Sunday, June 4, 2017, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Riley Mortuary, Inc.,110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY.
