Alvira A. “Vera” Stangle, 91, of Florida Avenue, Amsterdam, NY; passed away Saturday afternoon November 2, 2013 at St. Mary’s Healthcare with her loving family by her side.
Born in Amsterdam, NY; on July 4, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Pasquale and Josephine DeRose Vertucci.
Vera received her education in the Amsterdam school system and was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch Senior High School.
Vera was employed and was the first saleswoman for Sears & Roebuck Company in Amsterdam and Schenectady NY. She also worked for seven years at the Scotia Navy Depot during wartime.
Vera was a devout parishioner and communicant of St. Mary’s Church and attended daily mass until she could no longer drive. She was also a great supporter of the Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs at Auriesville, NY.
Her greatest joy was entertaining her family and friends with her accomplished recipes that every loved. She was especially close to her family usually getting together every Sunday with one or more of her siblings families. She will be loved and missed by all.
Her husband, Clifford C. Stangle Sr., to whom she married on September 7, 1947 passed away in 1989. Vera is survived by two daughters, Diane L. Stangle of Bradenton, FL; and Patricia A. Stangle of Saratoga Springs, NY; two sons, Clifford C. Stangle Jr; of Amsterdam, NY; amd William Stangle (Diane) of Mayfield, NY; one grandson, Jerry Blinsinger Jr; (Kelly) of Sandy, Ut., one great grandson, Jake Blinsinger, two brothers, Arthur Vertucci (Bernadette) of Fort Johnson, NY; and Alfred Vertucci ( Mary) of Amsterdam, NY; two sisters, Catherine St. Amour of Naples FL; and Margaret Habla of Tribes Hill, NY. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers and sisters in law and her grand-dog Bailey also survive Vera.
Vera was also predeceased by two brothers, Gabriel and Anthony Vertucci, and five sisters, Jane Laychak, Sue Hermance, Marion Bellen, Eleanor Clairmont and Lena McCaffrey.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 Tuesday morning at the Riley Mortuary, Inc. 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, followed at 11:00 by a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam.
Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fort Johnson, NY.
Calling hours are Tuesday morning from 8:30 to 10:30 prior to the services.
Memorial gifts in Vera’s name may be made to the Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs, 136 Shrine Road, Fultonville, NY 12070.
