Mark R. Alexander, 71, of Northampton Road, Amsterdam, NY; passed away Monday morning, February 25, 2019 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady,
Born in Amsterdam on October 22, 1947, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Clementine Wojcik Alexander.
Mark received his education in the Amsterdam school system and was a1965 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School.
He also graduated from SUNY Cortland with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education and was employed as an elementary physical education teacher in the Greater Amsterdam School District for 33 years.
Mark was an honorably discharged United States Army veteran serving from 1966 to 1972.
Mark was a parishioner and communicant of St. Stephen’s Church in Hagaman, NY.
Mark was a Building Representative and Grievance Chairman for the Amsterdam Teachers Association.
He enjoyed gardening, golfing, his Lionel Train set and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Mark is survived by his wife at home, Cecelia Kowalczyk Alexander, one son, Benjamin Alexander of Syracuse, NY; one brother, Randy of Ballston Spa, NY; one sister, Nicollette Thorton (Dan) of Apalachin, NY; and two grandchildren, Eloise and Wesley Alexander. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10:15 at the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010, followed at 11:00 by a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated at St. Stephen’s Church, 51 Pawling Street, Hagaman, NY, with Rev. O. Robert DeMartinis officiating.
Interment will follow at St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Hagaman.
Calling hours are Thursday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Riley Mortuary.
